About Split
Split is Croatia’s second city. It is a major port on the Adriatic coast, in central Dalmatia.
Split owes much of its importance, if not its very origin, to the Roman emperor Diocletian. The year 305 AD saw the completion of the famous Diocletian’s Palace, the core of future Split and eventually the city’s symbol.
The Palace has long been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within its walls await gorgeous monuments and churches. To the west, at the foot of Marjan Hill, lies much of the old town.
Springtime is arguably the best season to visit Split, when the yellow bush called weaver’s broom blooms in profusion: the original settlers in fact named their colony for this sight.
Split’s wealth of culture, cuisine and natural wonders have made it into one of the finest cities in all of the Mediterranean.
